Description

The exhibition "After a Hundred Pipes!", which is open in the Vilnius Defensive Wall Bastion of the National Museum of Lithuania, presents fragments of clay pipes from the 17th to the first half of the 19th centuries found in various places in Vilnius, authentic tools for their production, iconography associated with Vilnius smokers, and other exhibits.
This exhibition is the result of research conducted in 2017-2022. After examining fragments of pipes stored in the Vilnius Museums' collections from archaeological excavations conducted in the city in 1931-2019, more than 1,600 pipes were recorded, dating back to the 17th-19th centuries and brought to the city from various European pipe workshops from Istanbul to Amsterdam. Some of the pipes were undoubtedly made by local craftsmen. The geography of pipe analogues is even wider, as some 17th-century items are identical to those found in various places from Brazil to the shores of Japan.
This is the first exhibition of its kind in Lithuania, in which the collected clay pipes tell a wide story about the tobacco smoking habits of Vilnius residents in the 17th-19th centuries. In total, the exhibition exhibits almost 300 pipe fragments.
In the exhibition catalogue, the reader will encounter certain types of pipes and their parts.
