Description

Photographer Algimantas Kunčius donated his archive to the National Museum of Lithuania, which consists of about 80,000 negatives and 2,600 original photographs that immortalized people and events of culture and art from 1963 to 2000. This album, published in Lithuanian and English, contains most of the vintage prints exhibited in the 2019–2020 photographer's exhibition at the museum, and is also a kind of reconstruction of the publication Glavlit censored during the Soviet era (Minties Publishing House, 1984) - at that time, public figures who did not trust the Soviet government were not allowed to enter its pages.
The archive was accumulated while working as a photojournalist for cultural publications “Literature and Art” and “Cultural Bars”. For anniversaries, articles about exhibitions, concerts, and books, high-quality and non-boring portraits were needed that revealed the personality, its work, and its environment. Therefore, these are not studio portraits – Kunčius photographs while being among people, encountering them in their everyday lives – writing, painting, thinking, arriving, or leaving. And not all portraits are commissioned, they happen along the way, when meeting.
