Description
In the fall of 2024, the work of the Lithuanian master of optical art Kazys Varnelis (1917–2010) was presented to the French audience for the first time in two exhibitions. The largest European museum of modern art, the Pompidou Center in Paris, hosted an exhibition of the artist’s paintings “Optical Classicist from Lithuania,” and the “Ethnographic Op Art” exhibition was exhibited at the Victor Vasarely Foundation, the pioneer of optical art, in Aix-en-Provence. The catalog publishes texts by curators Indrė Urbelytė and Michel Gauthier, which present the artist’s life and work in the international context of optical and minimalist art. The exceptional design of the catalog was inspired by the creative legacy of Kazys Varnelis, preserved in the National Museum of Lithuania. This project is part of the 2024 Lithuanian Season in France.
The catalog is published in English and French.
